Team Captain Tips

Go For the Cold with This Polar Plunge Checklist for Team Captains

As a Team Captain, you're leading your crew in making the biggest splash this Plunge season! We've created a checklist to help you rally your team, make an impact, and ensure a memorable day for everyone involved. Here's how to get started:

Grow Your Colony and Set the Stage

  • Recruit Your Team: Invite friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors to join. Let them know they're supporting 18,000+ Special Olympics Virginia athletes by joining the inclusion revolution!
  • Personalize Your Team Page: Share why the Polar Plunge is important to your team and select a creative team name. Start things off by making the first donation to your page at www.polarplunge.com.
  • Encourage Team Participation: Get your teammates involved early by asking them to personalize their own pages, share your team page for donations, and explore the fundraising tools for added support.

2 Months Before the Plunge

  • Fundraising Fun: Try out ideas for plunge costumes and post photos on social media. Let friends and family vote on their favorite—but count their vote only if they’ve donated to your page!

30 Days Before the Plunge

  • Thank Your Donors: Send a text, email, or message to each donor. Even a small note goes a long way and keeps the colony strong!
  • Support Each Other: Keep an eye on teammates who may need extra help. Reach out to your Penguin Pal for advice—no penguin is left behind!

2 Weeks Before the Plunge

  • Encourage Final Fundraising Pushes: If a teammate hasn’t met their goal, offer extra encouragement to help them join the fun on Plunge day.
  • Remind About Offline Donations: Ensure all teammates bring any offline donations to event registration.

Final Week Before the Plunge

  • Make a Splash with Updates: Send one last text, email, and social media post for a strong finish.
  • Plan the Details: Coordinate a meeting time and location for your team on Plunge day, and finalize your costumes—go bold!

On Plunge Day

  • Celebrate and Check-In: Remember, each teammate must raise at least $100 to take the Plunge. Enjoy the experience, thank your supporters, and make memories to last a lifetime!
