Andy Mullins is a Special Olympics Virginia athlete who has faced challenges few of us can imagine. Born with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting the structure of his head and face, Andy has undergone 58 major surgeries throughout his life. Despite the physical challenges, Andy’s story is one of resilience, kindness and community.
Through Special Olympics, Andy has found not just a place to compete, but a place where he truly belongs. His mother, Jill Mullins, reflects on the importance of this community: “In the general public, there is a lot of cruelness towards people who look different. In a community like Special Olympics, he is accepted.”
Andy is a multi-sport athlete, excelling in swimming, athletics and volleyball. Beyond his athletic abilities, Andy is known for his calm, kind nature. He has spoken in front of hundreds, sharing his journey and inspiring others to see beyond appearances and embrace inclusion.
