Highlander Plunge Canceled Because of Inclement Weather
Updated Incentive Information:
Highlander Polar Plunge ® Celebration participants who had planned to plunge this past weekend will be able to pick up incentive items and turn in any additional funds raised on either of the following dates:
• Friday, Feb. 21, 10 am to 3 pm, Radford City Police Department
• Sunday, Feb. 23, 10 am to noon, Cassell Coliseum (during Basketball Regionals)
We’d also love you for you to Volunteer 2 Cheer during the Basketball Regional competition Feb. 23 so you can see what your efforts helped to make possible. For more details or to sign up, visit www.volunteer2cheer.com.
If you have any additional questions, please contact Matt Camire, Special Olympics Virginia Director of Development, at email@example.com.
After careful assessment of contributing factors related to conducting the Highlander Polar Plunge® Celebration, we, in consultation with Radford City Police Department as well as city and university officials, have made the decision to cancel this year’s Polar Plunge. The recent winter storm and sub-freezing temperatures create a hazard for plungers, volunteers and spectators. In addition, forecasts are calling for additional snowfall tonight that will increase travel and event hazards.
There will be no makeup date; the many logistical details involved prevent us from rescheduling.
More than 350 plungers had pledged to brave the New Rivers’ icy waters Saturday to raise money for Special Olympics Virginia. The event has raised almost $30,000 to date, short of the $50,000 goal.
Plans are being made to allow Plungers to turn in additional funds raised and receive their incentive items. We will be in touch in the coming days with pick up locations and times; we also will post the details here once available.
“We want to thank everyone for your understanding. The safety of our volunteers and Plungers is our top priority,” said Special Olympics Virginia President Rick Jeffrey. “We appreciate your commitment to our athletes. We invite you to our Basketball Regional competition, February 23 at Cassell Coliseum, so you can see what your efforts helped to make possible.”
